When Will the Suppression on Britain's Democratic Freedoms End? It Began with Palestine Protests

In contemporary Britain, protest is no longer a fundamental right. Instead, it has become a privilege that those in power grant or deny as they see fit. This constitutes the implication of new regulations that the ruling administration is putting forward, which would determine when and where protests can take place, with possible prison sentences for those who disobey these restrictions.

Erosion of Democratic Rights

Earlier administrations had already undermined this essential right: the former Conservative government had given law enforcement sweeping new authorities, which international human rights organizations had condemned as "significant and undue restrictions" on civil liberties. Collectively, these progressive assaults on freedom have effectively eliminated the hard-won right to public demonstration.

Using Tragedy to Rationalize Crackdown

The latest restrictive measures are being defended by referring to last week's terrible anti-Jewish attack on a Manchester Islamic center. We can all agree on universal agreement that the safety of Jewish communities in Britain must be protected. However, employing this atrocity as a justification to suppress dissent is not only unrelated to that duty but distorts it.

"If you can't set boundaries at genocide, you probably can't draw the line at democratic principles," commented a prominent American author, whose words that rings true for the present administration.

Historical Context of Demonstration

Reflect on Britain's rich history of public demonstration and direct action against racism and authoritarianism, from the 1936 Battle of Cable Street to postwar Jewish groups opposing fascism and the 1970s demonstrations against the far-right organization. Many of these historical demonstrators were labeled as extremists in their time, even while they were fighting for the freedoms of marginalized groups.

Present Situation

In the current complicated landscape, here's what's truly occurring: Israel – a foreign state – is perpetrating acts that international bodies have characterized as systematic destruction. Its warfare have prompted the International Criminal Court to release legal indictments against Israel's prime minister and his ex-military leader.

Western public opinion has changed significantly against Israel's military campaign. In Britain, a large percentage of citizens think Israel has probably committed war crimes. Most people would support a total prohibition on arms sales to the nation, and approve the detention of Netanyahu.

Suppressing Opposition

Having largely lost the argument, Israel's supporters are now exploiting a vile anti-Jewish attack to try to silence a mass movement against a ethical disaster. The British government seems included in this attempt. Government officials have failed to implement comprehensive sanctions on Israel and have permitted weapon shipments to continue.

People who are demonstrating against the erasure of Gaza have been characterized as hateful extremists. Yet there's a significant reason why there hasn't been a more extensive crackdown on these demonstrators until now: very limited protesters have made truly offensive statements about Jewish people, giving law enforcement minimal reason to intervene.

Problematic Association

Equating Jewish identity with the policies of the Israeli state is not only cynical but also harmful. The standard interpretation of anti-Jewish prejudice, adopted by the British government and numerous institutions, has been rightly questioned for potentially restricting valid commentary of Israel. However, there should be no disagreement about one of its central illustrations: that "holding Jewish people generally accountable for decisions of the state of Israel" constitutes antisemitism.

Escalating Restrictions

This is why we've reached a situation where police authorities can propose that protests criticizing Israel's actions should be canceled because they might "inadvertently or intentionally" endorse antisemitism. Similarly, government officials have declared that recognition of Palestine as a nation has made political parties "complicit" in supposed mistreatment faced by British Jews.

Inconsistent Treatment

On the very day as the religious center assault, the Israel's army killed dozens of Palestinian civilians in Gaza – adding to the horrific toll from two years of ongoing violence that have claimed many thousands of lives. British politicians and media outlets have barely concealed the minimal importance they assign to Palestinian existence. This represents one of the most brazen demonstrations of discrimination in our time.

Crossing Thresholds

Our government has already passed a dangerous boundary by proscribing a specific activist group, a peaceful, human rights-focused activist collective. Multiple thousands of British demonstrators have been arrested, primarily for holding placards against genocide and endorsing the banned organization. Many of those detained are elderly citizens; among them a former clergyman and the child of a World War II genocide survivor.

Global Comparisons

It's easy to see where this path leads. In the United States, government officials helped vilify demonstrations supporting Palestine: a former House Speaker implied that some were "connected to" foreign governments, while the current president described such demonstrations as antisemitic. In taking these actions, they helped legitimize the repressive measures on such demonstrations – and on freedom of expression in general.

Future Concerns

If a hard-right government comes to power, it would be granted sweeping powers to control opposition. What might a new administration do with this repressive toolkit? Our forebears fought, suffered and sacrificed their lives to secure our freedoms. We may ultimately regret how casually we allowed them to slip away.
