A uniquely yellow-colored apartment block visible behind helped us verify the video.
We are checking images and video posted earlier today that show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials state killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he later died to his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the site from which the images originated relied on social media reports saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow hue of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.
Locating other structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
