Are You Not Being Entertained? The Decline of the Goals from Open Play

Football match action
The Wolves squad have scored 10 fewer goals from open-play situations compared to at this stage the previous campaign.

One of the biggest stories of England's top flight season so far has been the reduction of scoring in open-play scenarios and the way clubs are netting more from set-plays as an alternative.

Looking at scoring methods to matchday 11 the prior season, we note a drop of 39 goals in open play and 26 more from team set-pieces and spot-kicks, resulting in 13 less overall.

If we look at the broader view, the number of shots sides are producing show a staggering 370 fewer in open-play than at this stage previously.

And despite the notable jump in set-play finishes, we've actually seen just two more attempts generated from them excluding penalties, indicating the proficiency sides are at devising strategies to score from dead-ball chances.

Goal Statistics Reveal an Interesting Narrative

The 301 goals scored in the first 110 fixtures up to now averages out at 2.74 goals per game, if maintained for the whole season could be the smallest for half a decade, back in 2020-21 (2.69 per game).

Yet merely under 200 goals scored in open-play equates to 1.78 per fixture and is on course to be the lowest for since 2009-10, since 2009-10 (1.76).

The 2009-10 season is also the sole English top-flight season to see goals scored more often from set-plays excluding penalties than this campaign's frequency of 0.77 each match (0.79 average).

Which Sides Are Most Responsible?

When it comes to goals scored from open play, Wolves have recorded by far the biggest decrease, netting a mere four in 11 games, 10 fewer than at this stage the previous campaign.

Excluding Wolverhampton, England's top division's decline in goals from open play is very much a London phenomenon, with five out of the city's seven teams recording at least five less scores from open-play than last season.

Honestly, that's largely down to their scoring many scores at the early stages of the previous campaign instead of them really struggling to score in open play the current term.

At the same time Manchester City have experienced the biggest increase, with all but one of their 23 goals so far coming in open-play.

Set-Piece Success

Looking at the promoted teams with the teams that went down they took the place of. Sunderland the Black Cats have scored three more scores in open play than the Saints managed in their opening 11 matches en route to relegation last season.

In terms of goals scored from set-pieces (excluding spot-kicks), the Gunners and Chelsea have recorded the largest rise, with both sides replacing the reduction of five scores that they've netted in open-play with an equal amount from dead-ball chances.

United have netted double the number goals from set-pieces as they did in the 11 games last season ahead of Ruben Amorim took over, while Sunderland additionally are more successful at converting than the similar-colored team they superseded.

City don't seem to have got the message about netting additional goals from set-pieces, since they've netted three less than the previous campaign, like the Reds, even if this may result from the tactical shift they've attempted to adopt.

Overall Patterns

Six clubs – the Gunners, the Blues, Fulham, the Magpies, Spurs and West Ham – have been this term's top trend-setters by netting less goals from open play and additional from set-plays, while City stand as the unique club to defy the pattern so far by achieving the exact opposite.

It will be fascinating to observe if sides persist to place such emphasis on set-pieces as the campaign progresses or if they find again their all-round creativity and start scoring more goals in open-play also.
