Carey's day, in contrast, was nothing short of priceless, culminating around late afternoon when he elegantly drove Stokes through the covers for three which prompted the Adelaide faithful rose in a huge roar. Fresh from his masterful outing with the gloves in Brisbane, the left-hander's aggressive 106 runs from 143 deliveries made sure that a post-lunch wobble of 94 for four failed to develop into a complete collapse. The 34-year-old has become a genuinely cricketer these days.

Aside from Archer's efforts, and despite the sapping heat, this was yet another disappointing day for the English bowling attack. Brydon Carse somewhat rolled over his form of the series, finishing with figures of 2/70 off 13 overs, and the incoming Josh Tongue picked up one for 63 in 15 overs.
The Durham bowler was erratic when tasked with sharing the duty of the new ball early on, no-balling on five occasions but still removing Travis Head for just 10 runs thanks to a spectacular one-handed catch by Zak Crawley at cover. It rather encapsulated the day's play for both sides: moments of brilliance interspersed with periods of sloppy play.
